Vestas V52, Inspection and revision of a Lohmann & Stolterfoht GPV 305 S1 PG

Vestas V52 gearbox inspection
SGS
Our client – a wind farm developer in Great Britain – contacted the Wind division of Stork Gears & Services to conduct a more thorough inspection of the gearbox for a Vestas V52 turbine. The wind farm’s stock comprises type V44 and V52 models of Vestas windmills and provides power for around 2,200 households in the region. The windmill to be inspected was a Vestas 52 (850kW) equipped with a Lohmann & Stolterfoht gearbox of type GPV 305 S1 PG.

The client had observed a fault in the intermediate-speed shaft, necessitating a closer inspection of the gearbox. Considering the extent of the damage, it would not be possible to repair the gearbox in situ, and it was therefore transported to a Stork Gears & Services workshop for a comprehensive inspection and root cause failure analysis.

The following components were inspected in detail:
  • the planet carrier, planet gears and planet pins
  • the ring gear and sun gear
  • the low speed shaft and gear wheel
  • the intermediate speed shaft and gear wheel
  • the high speed shafts
  • the pitch pipe and other related components such as the oil pump
Gearbox inspection and laser-cladding
Metal particles had contaminated the lubrication system as a result of the gear failure. The inspection revealed that the metal debris had damaged several internal components in a variety of ways, including micro-pitting, fretting corrosion and standstill marks. The detailed inspection report included the specifics of the damage to each component along with a suitable proposal for repair, whereby some components would need to be replaced and others could be manually restored.

Lasercladding
Stork’s most innovative repair technology (laser-cladding) was chosen to restore the bore of the intermediate-speed shaft. This advanced welding technology allowed a protective, fortifying coating to be applied to the bore without weakening the gearbox housing, which can be a danger with the more conventional option of sleeving. Stork Gears & Services has been using this precision technology more and more often when repairing wind turbine gearboxes. Our client was very impressed with the quality of the laser-cladding solution we offered.

Vestas windturbines

Vestas V52

The Vestas V52-850 kW is a pitch-controlled wind turbine with a rotor diameter of 52 meters. With up to 60% variable rotation speed, the V52 sees service in a variety of wind scenarios.
