Metal company Corus chooses Stork Gears & Services
| Corus IJmuiden has chosen Stork Gears & Services for the extreme fast repairing of one of her gearboxes used for the so called "hot rolling". Corus is an integrated steel company where raw materials in a chain of process steps, on location, are converted to steel products to be used by the steel processing industry. Steel from Corus IJmuiden is mainly consumed by the car and the packing industry. Hot Rolling "Hot rolling" is a part of the production process of steel in IJmuiden. During hot rolling thick plates of steel are being reheated until red-hot and after that rolled into long, thin strip steel of about 0,5 to 40 mm thickness. This hot rolling process happens in a roll street of approximately 800 meters in length, behind it is the reheat furnace, pre rolling mill, finishing mill, a cold water spray and down cooler. The costs of standstill during the hot rolling process are enormous and rapidly amount to ten thousands of euros per hour. Corus was coping with a damaged gearbox on the finishing rolling mill. The whole revision had to be executed in the shortest possible time. On-site machining Stork Gears & Services has deployed teams for 24 hours per day to revise and repair the gearbox parts on location in IJmuiden. "The condition of the teeth of the gear wheels was bad, we had to renew them on-site", says project leader Bart Vlaanderen of Stork Gears & Services in Haarlem. "We worked 24 hours a day for the revision so that the complete hot rolling process was operational again after 124 hours. Corus was very satisfied with our very fast service."
