Stork Gears & Services introduces "Laser cladding"

Lasercladding is a new, innovative lasertechnique for all kinds of surface treatments. With the help of a diode laser an additional material will be cladded on a component to extend its lifetime and improve its resistance against wear and corrosion.

After thorough research in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Lasertechnik Institut Stork Gears & Services discovered the enormous advantages and possibilities of laser cladding. Due to investments in new in-house lasercladding facilities we will be able to act fast and accurate to our customer's demands.

About laser cladding
Laser cladding is a technique that is already being used for several applications in the aerospace and automotive industry.
Laser cladding can be used for the protection against wear and corrosion of new components and the repair of damaged components.

Powder fed laserbeam cladding is the cladding of an additional material on a component with the help of a laser beam. Cladding coatingmaterials are chosen based on the technical purposes: provide corrosion resistance, chemical resistance or higher hardness.

Advantages lasercladding
Existing methods require a much higher heat input that may result in distortion of the component. The thermal input of the lasercladbeam can be precisely controlled. Therefore lasercladding is suitable for all kinds of damaged and new components in which a minimum of distortion is demanded and a maximum of high precision.

Laser cladding

The most important advantages of laser cladding over existing methods are:
  • Small heat input, less distortion
  • High precision
  • Low porosity
  • Less wear of equipment due to the lack of surface contact
  • Better thickness control
  • Fast repair times
  • Minimal dilution with the base metal
  • A very good metallurgical bond between the base material and clad layer
  • Possible to apply soft and hard layers or equal to base material
  • Cost-effective and environmental friendly
