Lohmann+Stolterfoht GVG 1400/1257 gearbox
| Customer called Stork Gears & Services
Asia Pte Ltd to take a look at the damaged pinion gear of the input
shaft of a Lohmann+Stolterfoht GVG 1400/1257 gearbox. The vessel is a
RORO with double input. The damage on the pinion gears was caused by
the ball bearings of the PTO shaft that dropped into the gearbox
internal as a result of a damaged bearing cover on the PTO shaft. Stork Gears & Services Asia Pte Ltd looked at the shaft and recommended that we can save the bull gear on this input shaft and manufacture a new input shaft (damage gears are forged on the input shaft). Our competitors were the OEM (Lohmann+Stolterfoht) and a well-known marine subcontractor who recommended "repairing" the damaged gears by welding. We quickly proceeded to explain to the customer the fallacy of such a "repair" and eventually won over the confidence of the customer when DNV flatly rejected the so-called "repair by welding". The other factor that won Stork the order was the very fast delivery we offered as compared to the OEM (4 weeks versus 4 months). Recommendations to the customers:
After evaluating all the various proposals from various suppliers, customer finally decided to award the job to Stork Gears & Services because:
Stork Gears & Services is in the business of repair/maintenance of gearboxes of several OEM’s for several decades. Stork is an independent service supplier and is not bound by contractual relationships with any OEM. Our customers appreciate our short delivery times and the quality of our service. |
