Fast repair of a Turbine gear
| During maintenance of the turbine for
the pump of an oil tanker at a local turbine workshop, damage on the
gear teeth was detected. The workshop informed its customer who
contacted us to assess the damage. The maintenance was being carried out within a very tight schedule and we were asked to come immediately. Within two hours we were at site. The diameter of the gear is about 930 mm and its width (teeth) about 245 mm. Upon inspection we concluded that there would be a high risk of breakdown during operation in future because of severe pitting on one side of the teeth. Consequent measurements showed the gear rim to be out of line with the gear shaft which most probably had resulted in an overloading of the teeth (one side). The customer asked us to prepare a technical proper solution with quotation keeping in mind the tight maintenance schedule. Within two working days we submitted our proposal with various options. Following some discussions with the customer it was decided during that week to go for a complete new bull gear fitted on the existed shaft and a new pinion shaft. This would eliminate any wheel matching problems between old and new gear wheel with possible high vibration level and improve the overall delivery time. |

We committed to an eight weeks delivery
time for this gear set including transportation from Rotterdam to
Singapore and delivered accordingly. Later, the customer told us he
did not believe we could do it in that time but since both our
delivery time and price were much better than the Japanese OEM he
decided to go for it anyway! Although he hoped not to be bothered by
any gear problems in the future he was very satisfied with our
performance and knew whom to contact for any gearbox related
