Wormed gearbox for sugar refinery
| Customer is a local Sugar Refinery
looking to install a reworked vacuum pan shipped from Australia. The
mixer for the vacuum pan is driven by a 22 kW electric motor with a
wormed gearbox. The gearbox is vertically mounted on top of the vacuum pan with an extended downward pointing output shaft coupled to the blade of the mixer. The gearbox will be located just beneath the ceiling of the plant and to install the vacuum pan the refinery will have to remove the roof, erect the vacuum pan and put back the roof again. Hence Stork Gears & Service Asia convinced customer to overhaul the gearbox when they have the chance now so that they will have almost a new gearbox after erection and not have to worry about the gearbox for some time (since removing the gearbox for servicing is such a major undertaking). The main challenge for this job was to make it attractive enough for customer not to consider purchasing a new gearbox. Keeping this in mind we proceed to open up the gearbox and discovered that the output gear has severe pitting, the shaft ends are also damaged and the shaft sleeve has severely corroded. |
Recommendations to the customers:
Replace complete set of seal and bearings. Re-condition shafts.
Replace shaft sleeve. Rotate damage gear face. Customer did their own
calculation weighing Stork Gears & Services’ option against
purchasing a new gearbox and finally decided to proceed with Stork
Gears & Services. The main reasons for choosing Stork Gears &
